Lyle Lovett - In My Own Mind
Lyle Lovett’s Large Band give him plenty of options to distract from the glorious, high lonesome sound of pedal steel. Luckily, Lyle has the taste to know when to call on Paul Franklin, arguably the top steel player in Nashville. Leaving his mark on thousands of records over the last few decades, Franklin’s impeccable touch lifts “In My Own Mind” to a new level. Possibly my favorite pedal steel solo, this simple break (at 4:21) caps off Lovett’s endearing last verse, and his swells in the chorus complement Lovett’s thin tenor perfectly.
Also, Lyle came out with a new record yesterday that I talked about here.
